T22: ELLEN SINGER VINE HAND-MADE BOOK

Ellen Singer-Vine’s journey as an artist began in the late 1960’s when the events of People’s Park caused her Cal classes to be cancelled and she left for Paris where she studied drawing and painting. Fast forward past the intervening thirty years and her career as a psychologist, and she is once again pursuing her passion for art, particularly collage. She is a mixed-media artist and long-time Berkeley Public Library supporter. This intricate and alluring hand- made little volume will no doubt inspire the winning bidder, whether it’s used for recording your inner thoughts or collecting precious mementos on some exotic journey of your own.

T14-20: RICHARD FRIEDMAN PHOTOGRAPHS

Richard Friedman, originally from New York City, came to Berkeley in 1968. He started taking pictures as a teenager, and some of his images of Greenwich Village in the 60′s have become iconic on Facebook and Flickr. His other photos from the 60’s and 70’s of London and Berkeley have appeared in shows, books, and online, along with more recent images on new music CD covers. While his day job is as a technical writer, he also does a weekly music program on KALW-FM. Richard and his wife Victoria Shoemaker have been tireless supporters of the Authors Dinner from its inception.

About his art Richard says, “If you were to ask me what interests me the most when taking pictures, I’d have to say that it seems that what I’m trying to photograph is stillness and a sense of place and position. Geometry fascinates me, and reducing a three dimensional world into a seemingly flat image is all about geometry. Some of these pictures are, what I call, ‘corner of the eye’ images… images you might catch out of the corner of your eye. Unexpected and momentary.” And fabulous!

T13: YOUR OWN ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

Do you have a tale to tell? Have you ever said to someone you know, “You’ve had an amazing life?” Or maybe it’s just time to interview grandma. Whether a relative, friend or neighbor, World War II vet, ‘60s politico, or witness to memorable events, this is your chance to have a professional oral historian video record these memories.

The winning bidder will work with Dr. Lisa Rubens, an oral historian with UC Berkeley’s Regional Oral History office, to frame questions and video record a one-hour interview with you or your chosen narrator. Dr. Rubens has conducted over 100 interviews, ranging from movers and shakers to ordinary people who punched a time clock. This is a fun and rewarding experience and makes a great gift. DVD copies will be provided.
