South Branch and Tool Lending Library

This site has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. A stunning new building, with solar panels on the roof to reduce energy consumption, is set to become a jewel of the neighborhood:

  • Space has been doubled for the adult and youth collections.
  • Work areas for staff have been redesigned and made more functional.
  • The Tool Lending library has been modernized for better storage and display of tools, improved safety for workers and easier access for all those who depend on this vital, only-in-Berkeley service.

The Neighborhood Libraries Campaign has:

  • Brought in custom shelving and new AV equipment to highlight the collection
  • Refinished historic benches in the children’s area and added new furniture elsewhere
  • Added a community information display to meet the needs of this diverse, densely populated neighborhood

“I do a lot of handyman work, and I’ve been coming to the Tool Library since the beginning. They have knowledge of the tools, they make people feel welcome, and they help everyone with their projects. It’s an extension of the books in the library. You go in there needing something, and you come out happy.”
